Hello Kindergarten Families! We spent much of the week getting ready for St. Patrick's Day!
With the artwork complete, it was time to begin Writers Workshop to create stories about their leprechauns: Also in Writing, we:

Hello Kindergarten Families! This week, the class became experts in Ten Frames, which are 5 by 2 grids used to illustrate numbers. Ten Frames strengthen a child's ability to subitize, or to instantly know how many without needing to count one-by-one. Using Ten Frames, students develop both a concrete understanding of numbers and a foundation for mental math. We've known for months that our class has eleven students, but this week we saw what that means: 11 is one more than 10. We can write that as a number sentence (10 and 1 is 11.) and as a math equation (10+1=11). Just look at those mathematicians smiling with confidence! In Math, we practiced Ten Frames quite a bit. We:

Love is... a group of amazing students proudly sharing what love means to them! Our Valentine Party was more successful and wonderful than I could have hoped it would be! Thank you all for your contributions and preparations. The class was incredibly happy to celebrate the day! Students decorated Valentine mailbags with foam stickers, glitter, markers, and feathers. The next day, they passed out their valentines to each other and then Mrs. Bullard's class came in to do the same!

Happy Chinese New Year!
Hello Kindergarten Families! We learned about Groundhog Day last week, including holiday traditions and the groundhog's habitat. We also took a shot at predicting the groundhog's prediction and ended in a 6-6 tie. Of course, half of us were correct! Punxatawney Phil did not see his shadow on Saturday morning, so here's to an early spring this year! This week in Language Arts, we:

O is for Opposite Day! What a fun coincidence - January 25th happens to be National Opposite Day! We got silly and said "goodbye" for "hello" and "no" instead of "yes." Then the students made individual books of opposites. I was aiming for a lesson in organization, fine motor skills (cutting), and beginning reading practice. I think all those goals were achieved, but ALSO there was a hidden lesson in problem solving and flexibility! Allow me to explain... I predicted that cutting and organizing many pieces of paper would make for lost pages and frustrated students, so I chose to copy each student's booklet on a different color paper. The problem with that is more than one student wanting the same color. We could have adopted the old, "You get what you get" philosophy, but I took a gamble to see if they could work together to make their decisions. What ensued was a lengthy yet productive group conversation with children genuinely trying to reach a solution that would please everyone involved. Students who hoped for the same color listened patiently to suggestions from their peers, offered understanding and flexibility, and all ended up entirely satisfied with the color of their booklet. They were beaming with pride from their accomplishment! Of course, I was too!! I hope your child had a chance to read you their mini book of opposites! In other news:
